Asbestos is a generic name given to a number of naturally occurring minerals. Inhalation of asbestos fibers has been conclusively linked to diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

A common misconception is that asbestos has been banned in the USA. While we understand the risks and have greatly reduced its use, there is no firm cutoff date for asbestos in building materials. Here is a short list of the most common materials that contain asbestos:

  • window glazing
  • stucco
  • cement pipes
  • transite siding & shingles
  • duct tape
  • furnace insulation
  • vinyl flooring
  • mastics and adhesives
  • pipe insulation
  • textured coatings
  • ceiling tiles
  • blown insulation
  • fireproofing
  • gaskets
  • caulking and putty
  • drywall mud/joint compound
  • roof shingles

The state of Georgia requires that an asbestos survey be completed on any structure, regardless of age, prior to renovation or demolition.

A Lead Inspection or Lead Abatement is conducted by a specially trained contractor and is intended to permanently eliminate the threat of lead in a property.

The RRP (Renovation, Repair, and Painting) Rule was established by the EPA as a way for contractors to identify components of a home that contain lead and safely complete a restoration or repair project. RRP Rules are not designed to permanently remove the threat of lead.

If you are working on a home or child-occupied facility built before 1978, a certified contractor must test for lead and follow the RRP rules if lead is discovered.
